Roseline - Cinematic Visual Novel

This is a visual novel project made in Unity, with a focus on storytelling and visuals. I aimed for this novel to adopt cinematic qualities to its presentation, with highly dynamic sequences.

This is a solo project, where I am directly responsible for most aspects, including, but not limited to Programming, Narrative, Scene Direction and UI/UX, as well as planning the development of the project and keeping the desired vision in all aspects as Director.

The development cycle of the demo is fully complete, and it is available on Steam and itch.io.

My Contribution

Programming

  • Building tools in Unity customized for this project, for more efficient development over the long term.
    Examples:
    - extended version of the Unity Timeline to allow for creating the desired cinematic quality of the scenes.
    - a tool to modify provided text files into a format appropriate to be used as text displayed in the game.
  • An intricate system that uses flags and events to present the text in the appropriate timing with the visuals of the scene, at any reading pace of the user.
  • A modular system that allows for easily re-ordering and placing scenes in a sequence.
  • UI programming

Narrative and Scene Direction

  • Wrote a rough outline of plot events, as well a bio for each character that includes relevant information for the story.
  • Making use of said materials, I wrote the entirety of the script presented in the game, considering pacing and the desired atmosphere for each scene to generate.
  • Arranged and assembled visually dynamic scenes in-engine using my personal development pipeline.
  • Scenes are built visually to account for desired cinematography and pacing according to the script.

UI/UX

  • Dynamic and responsive UI presentation, aesthetically consistent with the rest of the game’s visuals, using animated elements, masks, particle effects, and more.
  • Optimized menu layout to account for common use cases among visual novel readers, tuned according to player feedback.

Promotional

  • Using creative tools, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro, I created promotional assets for the demo, to be used on the store page. Examples include a 60-second trailer that portrays the cinematic qualities of the experience, multiple capsules and other store page assets and more.
